LED Light Column, Smithsonian American Art Museum
Artist Jenny Holzer was commissioned to create a column of LED lights from floor to ceiling in the Lincoln Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Working with the artist and LED manufacturer, TriPyramid designed the upper support structure, connected to the brick, barrel-vaulted building structure, and the base element. The visible base element is an integral aesthetic component of the sculpture, designed and fabricated to evenly distribute weight onto each of the 124 vertical LED strips. This was accomplished with custom springs and retainers, not visible from above.
